Executive Summary
Throughout 2008, representatives from 22 public and private, 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities across Maryland, collaborated to form the Maryland Campus Compact (MDCC). The Maryland Campus Compact is a statewide higher education association comprised of presidents and chancellors to promote the “public purposes of education” and fulfill institutional missions related to civic and community engagement.
About Campus Compact
Campus Compact is a national organization founded in 1985 comprised of over 1,100 member institutions that work to “advance the public purposes of colleges and universities by deepening their ability to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility.”
Over the past 23 years, institutions in thirty-five states have collaborated to establish state offices of Campus Compact. For more information about Campus Compact state offices, please visit the Campus Compact website.
About Maryland Campus Compact
The Maryland Campus Compact is a statewide higher education collaboration that will enhance institutions’ efforts to prepare students for lifelong civic and community engagement -- locally and globally, create effective partnerships between higher education institutions and their communities, and research and share best-practices among higher education institutions in Maryland.
The Maryland Campus Compact is committed to creating opportunities for student and institutional civic engagement and developing just communities, both locally and globally, through sustainable partnerships.
Support for MDCC
Support for the Maryland Campus Compact has grown rapidly. As of October 2009, twenty-three presidents of Maryland’s colleges and universities have submitted letters of commitment to MDCC. They represent a mix of institutional types, long-time members of the national Campus Compact and new members.
The Maryland Campus Compact is a non-profit membership organization supported through a combination of institutional dues (based on FTE), federal and private foundation grants, and in-kind contributions.
Governance
A statewide Taskforce representing 30 diverse institutions defined the mission, purposes, benefits, budget, dues structure, organizational structure, and strategic plan for the Maryland Campus Compact. Institutional representatives include Provosts, VPs of Student Affairs, Directors of Equity and Diversity, and Directors of Community Engagement.
Presidents and chancellors comprise the board, guiding the direction and development of the organization. The board will make final determinations on all aspects of the state Compact. An advisory group comprised of senior staff meets quarterly to advise the executive director and set the strategic directions and initiatives for the Compact.
